Vinyl Siding: How to Put It Up
A two-foot level, preferably a six-foot level, should ensure the corner is plumb. Install the corners 34″ down from the fascia. To do this, level the fascia against the wall, and make a mark. Mark the top of the corner by measuring down 3/4″ on the wall and driving a nail. Pull the corner close to the pin. The bottom of the hub should stick out half an inch below the siding. Step back from the corner and use your eyes to check that the nailing flange edges aren’t being pulled too tight or too loose, which could lead to an uneven installation utilizing wide corners.
Siding that Overlaps in the Most Effective Way
It’s essential to figure out how to overlap the siding (joints) before installing it in a garage. If your driveway and deck are on the right side of the house, you should start installing the vinyl siding on the left side to look its best from the street. As a result, the overlap between the right and left sides of the siding will hide the seams between the panels. To ensure that the siding is being applied correctly, it is recommended to install the first row along the entire wall and then use a chalk line to snap a streak along the top of the nailing flange. This ought to be done every five rows at most. Nail into the center of the nailing flange (from the middle of the siding to the edges) and leave the siding nail out 1/32″ (don’t push the nail snug to the nailing flange) when installing the siding. A twelve-foot section of siding can expand or contract by half an inch at different temperatures. Therefore the entire sheet needs to be able to shift from left to right. Remember that the first and last siding rows will have the most significant impact on the final product.
Setting up F-trim
J-trim will be required to receive the siding as you get closer to the top of the wall. It is recommended to put up the F-trim that will hold the soffit before putting up the J-trim. A two-foot level should be propped against the fascia’s base and extended to the wall. Mark the highest point of the story on the wall with a pencil or marker. To find the bottom of the F-trim, measure down half an inch from that mark. Snap a line with chalk at both ends of the wall. Install the F-trim (flange up) over the vinyl corner to flush its lower edge with the chalk line.
Install undersell in the J-trim to keep the siding in place once the F-trim has been set up by nailing the flange down. The J-trim and undersell must be extended to the corner.
There is no need to put J-trim around windows and doors with precut brick mold (trim), as the siding can slip into the brick mold. A utility knife can remove the vinyl strip from the sides of an enclosed brick mold. Cut the corner along the house before inserting the knife into the opening at the front of the brick mold. After slicing off a 12-inch segment, you can easily pull the rest of the strip out by hand. Cutting the slot along the entire trim length would be more complex than this. If you have pliers handy, use these to help you pull the frame.
