Technology Transfer 101 | Jim Freedman | TEDxBeaconStreetSalon



Have you ever wondered how technology that’s developed in universities and other academic institutions gets translated into a product to benefit the public? This process is known as technology transfer, and research organizations all over the world utilize teams of tech transfer professionals to evaluate new inventions, protect intellectual property through a patenting process, and license the technology to third parties, such as start-up companies or corporations, for further investment in development and commercialization. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Technology Licensing Office supports MIT inventors throughout this process and plays a vital role in the entrepreneurial ecosystem to ultimately achieve the mission of MIT: to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century.
As Associate Director of the Physical Sciences group at the MIT TLO, Jim is responsible for managing group of licensing professionals in the physical sciences and engineering as well as overseeing a portfolio of inventions in chemistry, chemical engineering and material science. He manages the coordination of the TLO’s activities in support of many large industrial collaborations and overseas research alliances.

Prior to his tenure at the TLO, Jim held senior R&D management positions at companies including Polaroid and Spectra Incorporated, and brings a wealth of industrial knowledge and experience to the MIT community. Jim holds a Master of Arts (MA) in Chemistry from Harvard University as well as a Master of Science (MS) in Chemistry from Columbia University. He received his MBA in Management from the Boston University Questrom School of Business.
